Sea Duck
& Puddle Duck Hunting
Sea Duck hunting
for Eider, Old Squaw and Scoter will take you to pre-dawn
to the offshore islands and ledges of Penobscot and
Muscongus Bays. These areas of Maines coast are world
renowned for their rugged beauty. Maine is the premiere
North American destination for Eiders.
We hunt from a unique and specially
designed Duck Boat that allows us to provide you with the
most effective and safe coastal gunning to be found. We
limit each boat to a guide and two hunters in order to
offer the highest quality hunt.
The Eider is a large duck up to 5
pounds, a very beautiful bird. You may think that because
of their size they are an easy target, but they aren't as
these birds fly low to the water and there are no
backdrops to judge speed and distance of the birds! These
birds are challenging to put down because of their heavy
down.
We have three species of Scoters,
Common, White Wing and Surf Scoters.
The Old Squaw are a smaller sea duck,
very challenging as they dart and weave. They seem to
humble us all!
Puddle Ducks include a lot of species,
Blacks, Mallards, Wood Ducks, Teal, Golden Eye,
Mergansers, Buffleheads and more!
A day afloat includes
breakfast before daylight, travel to the launch, an 10-20
minute boatride to the hunting area, setting decoys, and
settling in with anticipation of sighting birds! Seeing
birds on the horizon, flying to their morning feeding
areas. A few shots, a few misses, a few birds, and coffee
spilled as the birds are comming to the decoys! After a
great morning hunt, picking up and heading to the launch,
as the sea ducks only fly good in the morning. Back to
the farm for a hot noon meal, and the sea duck hunt is
over for the day. We are usually tired and anticipating
another great hunting day.
During the split season for
puddle ducks after lunch we would launch and
set up for the puddle duck hunt in the afternoon. This
makes a great way to finish out the day as the shooting
is usually good and a great way to add a few more species
to the daily bag.
Generous limits of seven Sea Ducks and
four Puddle Ducks during the split season guarantee a lot
of shooting.
Sea Duck season runs from October
through Mid-January. Puddle Duck season is a split season
running approximately the first 2 weeks of October, then
again about the 2nd week of November to the 3rd week of
December. Puddle duck season dates are varied but we have
approximately 55 days to hunt per year. Call for exact
dates.
Be sure to check the hunting
trip information to
learn more about the trips, and the 3 day packages
available.
