WOODCOCK &
GROUSE
If you've ever read a book
of Grouse and Woodcock hunting in new England that talks
of the beautiful covers, there is absolutely no
comparison as to actually being there in person! Upland
hunting in October lets you enjoy Maine in all of her
colored splendor; it's simply a beautiful time of year to
be afield.
The covers that we hunt
are typical New England covers, old farm land, abandoned
orchards and edges. Woodcock & Grouse hunting will
take you to productive covers within a fourty mile radius
of our farm.
Opening day starts out
with a great population of Native Woodcock. As the season
progresses the flight birds begin to arrive from the
North Country, on their migration south. What excitement
entering a cover and finding as many as 50 birds in a
small area! If you have never seen it, this is an
experience you will not forget!
Grouse hunting in this
part of the country has been very stable over the past
few years. These birds are very cagey and challenging, a
reason that people keep comming back to hunt the elusive
grouse!
Two hunters will be
accompanied by a guide and his or your own dogs. Your
guide works hard for you and does not carry a gun. All of
our dogs are quality pointing dogs, that work close to
give the best possible opportunity. Our modern kennel
facility is available for your dogs comfort.
A day afield
begins with a great breakfast. We
head to the first cover by 7:30-8:00 am. Mid morning
after a few laughs, maybe a bagged bird and a few misses,
we'll have a mid morning snack. Then off to more covers!
Later, a great tailgate lunch prepared by my wife, is
always a good break and wonderful surprise as we never
know what my wife has prepared. After lunch, on to more
covers, more empty shells, hopefully more bagged birds,
more beautiful sights, and great fun. Late afternoon back
at the farm cleaning birds, cleaning guns, telling
stories of the days activities, and feeling tired, with
great expectations for another day afield!
We hunt rain or shine, so
be sure to bring approiate clothing!
Our average flush rate is
25 birds per day with an approximate ration of 2/3
woodcock and 1/3 Grouse.
Season runs from the first
of October through mid-November.
